An Anonymous Letter, a Second Company: Inside a New Tip in the Broderick Case

DALLIN. Three days after Hyrum Broderick's arrest, an envelope showed up in the mail slot at the Chronicle's office downtown. No return address. No signature. Just a single typed page and a photocopy of what looks like a payment ledger, both addressed to this reporter by name.

The letter names a company this paper had not previously heard of: Red Mesa Holdings, LLC. According to the letter, Red Mesa received "consulting payments" from the hospital's charitable foundation on a rolling basis for the past three years, the same three years Hyrum Broderick chaired the board that approved the foundation's spending. The photocopy shows a column of dates and dollar figures with no explanation attached to either.

This paper doesn't run anonymous claims on faith, but some of this one checks out on its own. A search of public business filings confirms Red Mesa Holdings, LLC exists, registered out of state, with a post office box for a registered agent and no listed employees, the same shape as the "shell companies" a source described to the Chronicle last week in connection with the federal case against Broderick, Police Chief Tony Price, and Dr. Jason Broderick. Calls to the number listed on that filing went straight to a voicemail box that has not been set up.

Reached by phone, a hospital board spokesperson said only that the foundation "follows standard financial controls" and declined to answer specific questions about Red Mesa Holdings. The Hoodoo County District Attorney's office declined to comment, citing the ongoing investigation. Nobody this paper spoke to would confirm or deny that Red Mesa Holdings has any connection to the federal case, on or off the record.

One line from the letter has stuck with this newsroom since it arrived: "This is not the only name. Watch the health department next." The Chronicle can't verify who sent it or what they know. What we can do is keep pulling the thread we've already got, and we intend to. Anyone with information, about Red Mesa Holdings or otherwise, is encouraged to write in.
