Hospital Board Chairman Arrested on Murder Charge; Police Chief, Health Official Also Charged

DALLIN. Dr. Hyrum Broderick, chairman of the Afton Memorial Hospital board and a retired surgeon, was arrested downtown Saturday on a murder charge. It's one of three arrests connected to a federal investigation into Cactus BioChem and a network of shell companies operating in and around Dallin. Also taken into custody: Dallin Police Chief Tony Price and Dr. Jason Broderick of the Hoodoo County Health Department, both charged in connection with a coverup.

The arrests played out in plain view of a crowd gathered a block away for the Dinah's Bistro auction, which closed minutes later at $450,000. Federal agents led all three men to separate vehicles; none made a statement to reporters. According to sources close to the investigation, the murder charge against Hyrum Broderick concerns a victim who remains publicly identified only as John Doe.

Neither the Dallin Police Department nor federal authorities have released the full scope of the allegations, and no one reached by this paper would speak on the record about the coverup charges against Chief Price and Dr. Jason Broderick. A source familiar with the case, speaking on condition of anonymity, described the underlying structure as "layers of shell companies, each one hiding another," built up over years through hospital board contracts and civic donations.

The investigation reaches back to Cactus BioChem's research facility, the same company that has repeatedly declined to comment on this paper's coverage of the lights reported near Coyote Crossing. Sources say a fenced area near the site has been under federal quarantine for some time. Whether or how the two threads connect is not yet confirmed, and the Chronicle is continuing to press for answers on both.

Authorities say the case is expected to take months, if not years, to fully unwind, and that additional names may yet surface. This is a developing story; the Chronicle will publish updates as they're confirmed.
