Domino Takes the Ribbon at the Hoodoo Fall Festival

DALLIN. The Hoodoo Fall Festival's costume contest has crowned its Best in Show, and this year it wasn't even close. Domino, the Dalmatian belonging to Lauren Briscoll and Hunter Morgan, took the ribbon Saturday evening in front of a crowd that, by this reporter's count, was cheering louder for the dogs than it was for the chili cook-off two booths over.

Domino didn't need much of a costume to begin with: a coat already covered in spots does most of the work. So the pair leaned into it instead of fighting it, sending him down the makeshift runway in a striped referee's vest and a whistle clipped to his collar. "He already looked like he was born to make the calls," Lauren said, still laughing about it after the judges announced the win. "I just gave him the outfit to match."

He beat out a pumpkin-costumed corgi, a golden retriever dressed as a hot dog, and a very unbothered cat in a tiny witch's hat, according to the judges' table, who cited Domino's "commitment to the bit": he reportedly sat, stayed, and gave one solemn bark on command, as if making a ruling. Hunter was seen handling the leash and the applause with about equal enthusiasm. "She trained a dog and I just carry the treats," Hunter said. "That's the whole division of labor around here."

The ribbon now hangs, by Lauren's account, on the refrigerator, "right next to the actual medical diplomas, where it belongs." The Hoodoo Fall Festival runs the rest of the month. The Hoodoo Holiday Princess Pageant comes later in the year, with details to follow in a future issue.
